We just received word that a grant proposal to the Pittsburgh Conference Memorial National College Grant (that's the PCMNCG) was funded. The grant, which was co-written with Cindy Strong (analytical chemist at Cornell College), is for a handheld X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. This instrument will allow semi-quantitative analysis of solids for metals - such as lead in paint, heavy metals in toys, metals in soils, or alloys. (Did I mention it comes with a holster?)
Marty St. Clair is a chemistry and environmental studies professor at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
