We're also providing laboratory support to the Northeast Iowa RC&D's projects on the Turkey and Upper Iowa Rivers. These water monitoring efforts have been ongoing for quite a few years, and we're happy to be able to help them continue collecting data. We may need to get up that way and do some sampling from a canoe...
The Upper Wapsipinicon Watershed Management Authority was recently created to deal with flooding and water quality issues on the Wapsi in the counties of Buchanan, Chickasaw, Deleware, Fayette, and Howard. As they develop their WMA, they are carrying out water sampling and bringing the samples to us for analysis. We look forward to working on the Wapsi in the future.

...for "flooding". Apparently Good Morning America was reporting flooding in CR this morning. There was some flash flooding, and the Cedar Rapids airport reports 4.19 inches between 7 PM and 1 AM last night (including 2.77 inches in 1 hour!). However, Indian Creek is generally still in its banks, and the students are out taking samples - always interesting after a big rain. Our campus rain garden - located by Hickok Hall and taking a quarter of the rainfall off the roof - apparently absorbed and infiltrated the entire rainfall without overflowing. It had been freshly mulched, so we would have seen mulch in the grass if it had overflowed. It works... Check out the Lime Creek Watershed Association's website - there are new pictures of Laura Bybee ('16) and Maddy Jensen ('17) sampling the tile boxes. This project is allowing us to give direct feedback to farmers on the amount of N and P leaving their fields. (Ciera Rodriguez ('16) and Christina Brown ('18) were sampling the stream sites at the time.)
